Minimal floor height gain

Thin mat electric underfloor heating

Heating cable pre-laid on a mesh mat, thin enough to go into the tile adhesive bed with almost no gain in floor height.

Thin mat electric heating

A thin mat is heating cable already fixed to a 500 mm wide fibreglass mesh at the right spacing. It is rolled out across the floor, the mesh is cut to turn it at the wall, and it disappears into the tile adhesive. This is the quickest electric system to install and the one that adds the least height.

The MG 150 uses a 3.5 mm cable with a 3 m cold tail and very low EMF. It suits thin adhesive beds, self-levelling compounds, a thin screed on concrete, fibre cement sheeting, or tiling straight over existing tiles.

The ML 150 is the thinnest mat in the range at 2.5 mm, with a twin cold tail. Where the floor build-up has almost nothing to give, it fits within most quality two-part adhesives for the smallest possible increase in floor height.

Installation

The mat goes down once the waterproofing is complete and the day before the tiler starts. It is set out to keep the cable clear of the shower waste, the toilet pan and any fixing points, and the cable itself is never cut.

We recommend F-Board insulation under the mat. It sits in direct contact with the heating element, stops the heat going downwards and brings the floor up to temperature noticeably faster, which also cuts running cost.

A floor sensor is run into a conduit between two cable runs so it can be replaced later without lifting tiles. A licensed electrician connects the thermostat on its own circuit with residual current protection, and the mat is tested for resistance and insulation before and after tiling.

Things to consider

  • Rated at 150 watts per square metre
  • Both mats have a maximum operating temperature of 70°C
  • Goes down after waterproofing and before tiling
  • F-Board insulation is recommended under the mat
  • Suits a flat rate or a time-of-use tariff
  • Best for tile and stone finishes
