Fast heat response

In-screed hydronic underfloor heating

In-screed underfloor heating is a heating system where hydronic pipes are installed beneath the floor and covered with a layer of screed. Because the heating pipes sit within a thin 50 mm layer of screed just below your floor finish, it heats up much quicker than deep in-slab systems.

Once the screed has been installed and cured, most types of floor coverings can be installed on top. A wide range of floor finishes can be installed over the screed. This makes screed underfloor heating a flexible option for different flooring styles, including tiles, timber and polished concrete.

Installation

The heating pipes are secured to the floor using mesh or suitable fixing clips before being covered with a sand and cement screed.

The pipes are connected to one or more hydronic manifolds, which are then connected to the home's heat source, such as a gas boiler or heat pump.

Insulation can be installed underneath the heating system to reduce heat loss into the subfloor and help direct more heat upwards into the room.

A minimum screed thickness of 50 mm is generally required, providing adequate coverage over the heating pipe while maintaining the strength of the floor system.

Screed heating can respond faster than an in-slab system because the pipes are positioned closer to the finished floor surface. However, it generally stores less heat than a thicker in-slab system.

Heating pipe

We use quality PE-Xa hydronic heating pipe designed specifically for underfloor heating systems. The pipe includes an oxygen barrier to help protect the heating system and is designed to handle the temperatures and pressures associated with hydronic heating.

Things to consider

  • Minimum screed thickness of 50 mm
  • Insulation underneath is recommended
  • Suitable for large areas and open-plan spaces
  • Faster heat response compared with in-slab heating
  • Suitable for a wide range of floor finishes
